Talking With a Gay Superhero: Parthenon PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ellen Tevault

DW: My favorite superpower is one that I don’t posses yet. I have always liked telekinetics! I think that would be a great power to have. For that reason, I have always loved Jean Grey and Justice.

GLM: Who would you want for a sidekick? Why?

DW: I would love a sidekick! In my original back-story and paperwork on the show, I actually wrote in a friend/partner who travels around with me and helps me battle evil. I based the character on my real-life partner Derek, but I gave him no super powers, so he would have to battle using his smarts, not his muscles!

GLM: Do you think Batman & Robin are gay? Or was it creative marketing for the duo?

DW: I often wondered about that myself! Two single men living together in a big mansion, who like to wear tights…that is about all I am going to say on that one!

GLM: Do you wish comic books were more blatant about the gay characters and their lives?

DW: Some comics are really starting to be more blatant about their gay characters and I am lovin’ it! A comic book called Pride High is a great example of this. It features a few gay characters who are just living their lives as young superheroes in training. Young Avengers and Outsiders are also both handling the subject very well. They have a great mix between the main story and the characters’ personal lives. They let you know that Wiccan and Hulking are boyfriends and Thunder and Grace are girlfriends, but it is only a sub-story in the grand scheme of the book. Think of it like this. Is there a whole book on Superman being straight and dating Lois Lane? No, Superman is out saving the world and at the end of the day he comes home to Lois! I actually enjoy that type of book. I think the public is definitely ready for this type of book. Like I said on the show, they are heroes first; they should not be defined by their sexuality.

GLM: Did you think X-Men: The Last Stand represented the gay rights movement?

DW: I actually did not get to read that series, but I have often felt that the gay population could always relate to the hardships of being a mutant. Some feel like they have to hide their true nature, in fear of what people might say. I truly believe that what makes you different always makes you strong. So be true to yourself and everything will always work out!

GLM: How does your partner feel about you being on Who Wants to be a Superhero, season two?

DW: My partner was extremely excited for me to be on the show and he was very supportive of it. Last season we were glued to the TV for each episode! We are both reality TV show junkies. It is a secret obsession that we share. I keep trying to talk him into trying out for season three!

GLM: What does your family think of you being on the show?
