Talking With a Gay Superhero: Parthenon PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ellen Tevault

DW: Let me start by saying that I am really lucky in life. My parents are divorced and both remarried and I get along with all of them great! My family was very support of me when I came out to them in college and that support still remains as strong. Not one of them was really shocked when I told them that I made the show! They just assumed I would. If you ask my mom why, she will get out the old photo albums and show you pictures of me running around in my Batman underoos as a kid jumping off the furniture. She thinks this show was tailor made for me to shine!

GLM: Who's your favorite super villain? Would you want to fight the villain?

DW: My favorite villain is Harley Quinn. I love her comedic style and her one-liners are great! I have a lot of sculptures of her and buy every book she is in. I however would not want to fight her, but if I had too I am sure I could trap her in a force field to contain her.

GLM: Since you live in Indiana, how do you feel about the new superhero museum in Indianapolis with mainly Batman and Superman collectibles displayed?

DW: How have I never heard about this yet? I am seeing a field trip in my near future! As far as the museum focusing on Batman and Superman, those are two of the most popular superheroes of all time, so that does not surprise me. Maybe when I go there, I could talk them into putting up a Parthenon poster or two.

GLM: How is your new season two character going to be different, since you were designing him before you were called for an L.A. tryout based on your season one tape?

DW: After watching season one of the show, I thought my character was too complex and did not deal enough with my own life. I created a new character called BRACE, whose back-story was a little more aligned with my own. A few years ago I was involved in an accident where someone was drunk and fell from a three-story balcony and landed directly on me. It compressed my spine and I have had back issues ever since. For a month or two after the accident, I had to wear a back brace to help me in my daily life. This was also the origin of BRACE. He was injured and used his engineering background. Did I mention that that was what my degree is in? He uses his engineering background to create a cybernetic back brace. When he wore it; he could fly, project a force shield and possessed a few other super powers. His major weakness was that when he was without his brace he could not lift over 30 pounds and he was extremely susceptible to pains from even the simplest of tasks. I had the suit all designed and actually started creating the brace itself for my costume, when I got the call from Sci-Fi about my original character. They left it up to me about which character I wanted to audition with, so I stuck with my original character. After all, it was good enough to get a call back a year later!
