Publishers Speak PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ellen Tevault

I decided to find out about the state of GLBT publishing from the publishers. Unfortunately, not all of them responded. Authors and readers can learn about the publishers behind their favorite books and maybe learn about some new ones. They’re listed alphabetically.

1) What's your publishing focus?

Bold Strokes Books: We publish works of LGBT fiction and nonfiction focused on the “queer experience.” Our titles include general fiction as well as genre fiction (romance, mystery/crime, speculative fiction, erotica). Our interest is in publishing quality works that are entertaining, informative, thought-provoking, and life-affirming.

Circlet Press: Circlet Press's stated mission is to "celebrate the erotic imagination." In stricter terms, we publish erotic science fiction and fantasy, including many books with explicit gay and lesbian themes, and a few other things, which intersect that mission (like the Erotic Writers Market Guide).

Intaglio: Our focus is to create quality books that entertain the lesbian audience. Naturally, we’d love everyone to read our books, but we are unwilling to compromise when it comes to content. Our books have diverse themes but center on the lives and loves of lesbian characters.

Lethe Press: has three areas of interest. The first involves reviving out-of-print or forgotten works of gay fiction or studies back to print. The second is in partnership with the White Crane Institute, a not-for-profit organization devoted to gay culture and wisdom. These titles may be inspirational. Lastly, I love queer speculative fiction.

P.D. Publishing: We're not sure we really have a focus.  <smile>  Let us answer this question in a round about way.  We publish LGBT material that we love when we read it.  We also wanted to give authors a kind of old fashion customer service while at the same time giving them high quality books through today's publishing technology. There are many options out there for LGBT publishing, so our distinction, if there really is one, is that we strive to keep the author involved through-out the publishing process, and treat them with respect and courtesy.

RedBone Press: publishes work celebrating the cultures of black lesbians and gay men, and work that further promotes understanding between black gays and lesbians and the black mainstream.

Spinifex Press: Our mission statement is to publish innovative and controversial writing with an optimistic edge. We are a feminist press with a very substantial international lesbian list. We have published lesbian writers from Japan, India, Australia, England, USA, Canada, New Zealand. We have published lesbian poetry, fiction and non-fiction. In non-fiction we have published in photography, cartoons, health, animals, autobiography, travel, technology, feminist theory, environmental issues  - and more.

STARbooks Press: We focus on gay erotica, gay fiction and non-fiction, and first time authors who don’t quite fit the mold.

Wildcat Press: is a book-publishing version of an independent record label or an independent film studio.  I.e.  we publish my LGBT-themed fiction and nonfiction writings exclusively.  Formerly I published with William Morrow, Random House and other mainstream publishers, but in 1993 I left mainstream publishing and went independent because of issues over creative control and royalty payments.  Wildcat Press was launched in 1993 with my business partner, Los Angeles media specialist Tyler St. Mark.  We have almost all my titles in print, including my best-selling FRONT RUNNER series of three novels, which is what I'm best known for.
