Page 1 of 5 If you are into rap and hip-hop, you need to check out these GLBT rappers. They are awesome. I interviewed these five rappers from HomoRevolution Tour in celebration of Black History Month, but the group is made up of all flavors of rappers and hip-hop artists. I was blown away with how insightful their responses were to my questions. Next time, you go to buy a CD, support a GLBT performer, by buying their music. Websites are listed below the interview.
1) What is your gender identity and sexual orientation?
Deadlee: I am a gay male – Some call me Homo Thug or Cholo Fag because I am more masculine looking- Tori Fixx: I'm a gay, male...I hope! :-) Foxxjazell: I'm a hetero transgender girl. Melange Lavonne: I consider myself a Lesbian with Gay man fashion sense. Ha Ha. Shorty Roc: I'm a black gay male, and been so for as long as I can remember. 2) How do you feel that your music career has been affected by above? Deadlee: I wear my sexuality on my sleeve because I think it is important that young gay people see that there are open proud gays in different walks of life. I did not have any gay role models growing up, and it makes it more difficult accepting yourself. Tori Fixx: I think that has been both a blessing and a curse to what I do. The blessing is that my music has touched people and helped people who can relate to my songs or who are simply free spirits and enjoy great music. The curse comes in when I can't get through that "mainstream industry door" because of the homophobia that still exists within the music industry which means that I cannot get to any and all audiences and that kind of sucks in my eyes. Foxxjazell: It's been affected a lot because the music industry doesn't know how to market trans or gay people. Melange Lavonne: I think I have been discriminated against because of my strong masculine image, values and beliefs about society and my stance on certain social issues. Shorty Roc: My music expresses who I am, the life I live, and pride within myself. In my music, I express my struggles coming up as a gay man from the hood, Brooklyn, NY. I address political issues, practicing safe sex, having fun within the gay community, gay love and gay dating. My music exemplifies my confidence in my skin.
